A Brief History

Amesbury MA was first settled in 1642 as part of Salisbury and it wasn’t until 1668 that it became incorporated as a town. In its early days, Amesbury was primarily a farming community, but over time, transitioned into more of an industrial economy with its early manufacturing and thriving shipbuilding port.

The falls of the powwow river, which bisects Amesbury, served as a power source for the textile mills built in the 19th century. Those former textile mills now make up the surround of Amesbury’s Millyard; which is used as a performance area, nature walk, and a park.

In 1996, Amesbury officially became incorporated as a city and no longer a town. Now known as the “City of Amesbury”, Amesbury still has a small-town feel despite its city structure governance.
